Frequently Asked Questions by Students

1. Why is Hagerstown Hall (UH housing) still without air conditioning?

This is the decision of Resident Life and Residential Facilities. According to the On-Campus Student Housing Strategic Plan, Hagerstown Hall is scheduled for HVAC installation and renovation with proposed completion by August 2020.

2. I’m curious about the history of UH housing. What was the rationale for transferring UH housing from the Denton Community to the Ellicott Community?

University Honors students in Denton voted to move to the Ellicott Community (leaving A/C behind) because of their desire to be closer to the center of campus and to The Diner, and (to a lesser extent) to be closer to the rest of the Honors College community. Students in Hagerstown Hall  (non-Honors) voted to move to the Denton Community to get A/C.

3.  Are there any current UHSAB initiatives regarding UH housing?

Yes! The UHSAB is currently working with the Department of Resident Life to create accessible and affordable housing for all students. According to the On-Campus Student Housing Strategic Plan, designs have been created for a new housing community, known as the Academic Village. It is our goal that this Academic Village includes housing for University Honors and serves as an "environment that elevates the functional attractiveness of participation in challenging academic programs, attracts highly-talented students and is a visible symbol of the continuing importance of academic rigor at the University."

Please note that due to the University's budget cuts, the plans for the Academic Village have been restructured and pushed back indefinitely. You can read more about this here in The Diamondback.

4. Which body decides the requirements for the UH citation?

Ultimately, this is a decision made by the Provost, upon receiving a recommendation and report from the Provost’s Committee on Living-Learning and Other Special Programs. Dean Donna Hamilton chairs that committee. Dr. Bill Dorland can provide further details upon request.
